Spring Swap Parcel

This morning I received some lovely post, the loveliest being my Popular Crafts Magazine Spring Swap from the talented @Gemma_Winter.

Isn’t this gorgeous?

The amount of work that must have gone into this.   It’s fabulous.

And my treat was great too.

Some gorgeous glitter in my favourite colours and some adhesive lace which I’d been thinking about buying recently.   Gemma is a mind reader!

If you haven’t signed up for a Popular Crafts swap, do it now!   The next one is Union Jack themed.   I’ve had some brilliant swaps and it encourages me to get creative and try new things.   Have a look at my blog post to see what I sent Gemma.

Forty one and a quarter

On my 41st birthday, I blogged about what I hoped to achieve in my 42nd year.   It’s been a tricky 3 months with sciatica, flu and tonsillitis, but I thought it was time to review.

  1. Knit a pair of socks – Wool bought, pattern sourced
  2. Learn crochet – I’ve had a lesson with the lovely @meanyjar but not progressed any further
  3. Organise craft area of office – Done!
  4. Improve my jewellery making – I’ve made a bracelet, earrings and a handbag charm
  5. Blog at least weekly – Probably not, but I’m working on it
  6. Start adding pictures to the blog – Done!
  7. Learn machine embroidery – I’ve done a bit more research so I’m on track
  8. Scrapbook regularly – Big fail. No scrapbooking done at all.
  9. Bake bread regularly – Yes! I love baking bread.
  10. Bake with the craftyguidelets weekly – Regularly, perhaps not weekly. No one wants a germy cake!
  11. Send birthday cards and presents on time – So far, so good
  12. Take part in a swap – Many times. I’m a regular @popularcrafts swapper and I’m doing a @skullsandponies one.
  13. Tame the magazine mountain – Tamed while I was ill
  14. Knit a hat – Pattern and wool ready
  15. Knit gloves – Ditto!
  16. Use up my lavender stash – Lavender bags planned for my craft fairs in May.
  17. Begin gardening again – If it ever stops raining!
  18. Finish soon to be 3 year old craftyguidelet’s birth sampler – Not yet!
  19. Finish her Silvermist costume – I know where it is, but, erm, you know!
  20. Make an item of clothing for me – Pattern and fabric ready
  21. Comment on people’s blogs more, as I love it when they comment on mine – I’ve tried but can do better
  22. Keep food waste to a minimum – Doing really well with this. Need to try harder with bananas though.
  23. Cook at least one ‘effort’ meal a week – Apart from when I was ill, I’ve done well with this.
  24. Keep up with my housework app – Does anyone really sweep their porch weekly?
  25. Weekly craft days with the craftyguidelets – They love craft.   Can’t stop them!
  26. Exercise daily – Daily? Ever? Oops!
  27. Regularly get fresh flowers – Definitely.   They really make a difference.
  28. Start badge making – Badges ready for sale at May Fair.
  29. Make more time for friends – Who wants to hang out with a germ infested person?   Apart from that, I’ve not turned down any opportunities.
  30. Try felting – The wool was finally delivered so it’s ready to go when I have time.
  31. Don’t use the exercise bike as a clothes horse – Occasionally it is, but generally not.
  32. Decorate our bedroom and bathroom – Still at an impasse with husband over wallpaper.
  33. Buy handmade/local and make more gifts – Trying, but could do better.
  34. Listen to more music – I love my ipod!
  35. Sort my office admin area – Sorted.
  36. Finish the lacy scarf before it gets too warm to wear it – Finished and worn.
  37. Meet up with some tweeps – I met the lovely @meanyjar and have plans for a big tweetup soon.
  38. Clear my sky+ backlog – I finally came to the conclusion that I was never going to catch up on 12 hours of Desperate Housewives!   Delete.
  39. Make more desserts – Must try harder!
  40. Start Christmas preparations  in July – Fingers crossed.
  41. Never put off until tomorrow something I can do today – Yeah, right.

I give myself a C+ must try harder.   Second quarter starts on the 4th May, but I’ll see if I can start again tomorrow.   Or should that be tonight? (see #41!)

Spring Swap

After all the fun I had with the Popular Crafts swaps before, of course I was going to enter the next one.   Unlike the button, owl and heart swaps, Spring wasn’t that obvious at first.   Added to that, a bad back stopped me from doing anything creative for some time.

I was paired with @Gemma_Winter whose likes included sparkly things, unusual things and kitsch.   Having changed my mind several times about what to make, I had a snoop on Gemma’s twitter profile and saw that as well as her love of fabrics and patchwork, she also loves baking.   I’ve had some insulbright insulated wadding in my stash for some time so I thought I’d have a go at making an oven mitt.

On one of my many browses through the fabrics online, I happened upon this lovely fabric from Fabric Rehab.   The flowers and birds said ‘spring’ to me, and I thought the pattern was fairly retro and kitsch.

And here is my oven mitt.

I was so pleased with how it came out, I’ve already cut more out to put on my website.

I also needed a treat so I went sparkly and unusual with an applique flower and some sea themed charms.

The birdcage picture is one of my hand-stamped images that I send out with my Craftyguider purchases as a compliment slip.

I can’t wait for Gemma’s parcel to arrive!

Next swap is a Union Jack theme.   Thinking cap on.

Girlguiding UK’s Big Gig

On 31st March, I took 17 Guides, 2 leaders and a parent helper to Birmingham’s LG Arena for Girlguiding UK‘s Big Gig.   The Big Gig is a music event at a major venue exclusively for Guides which Girlguiding UK has been running for 12 years.   In the past, it’s also been held at Wembley Arena, Manchester’s MEN Arena and The Millenium Dome.

I’ve taken Guides to Wembley and Birmingham in the past, but it was the first time I’d gone to Birmingham on the train.   We come from Hertfordshire so it meant a 9am start to travel into London and out again.   9am on a Saturday is unknown to most 10-14 year olds, so they must have been keen.

Getting the tickets was a lottery to start with.   Leaders have to apply and send payment when no acts have been announced, and with no certainty of getting tickets.   Every week at Guides, the girls kept asking if we had tickets, and when I was able to tell them that we had them, I was the most popular person in the world!

And so we ended up in Birmingham with around 13,000 other Guides and leaders to see The Saturdays, Rizzle Kicks, Olly Murs, Matt Cardle, Alexandra Burke, Rita Ora, Conor Maynard, Charlene Soraia and presenter Helen Skelton.   The atmosphere in the arena was amazing.   Loads of flashing bunny ears and thousands of phones held up recording video and taking photos and looked amazing, and the sound of all the screams was deafening.

Even amongst that many people, I even managed a wave at fellow Guide tweeter @CazzyPie.   This is her image that she tweeted showing me somewhere!

The next event at the end of this year will be in Sheffield.   That’s probably a journey too far for us, but hopefully it will be back to Wembley in 2013 and I’ll be first in the queue to apply.

Thank you so much Girlguiding UK for organising another fabulous Big Gig.   It’s another showcase event to make Guiding relevant to today’s girls and something they can be proud to say they are a Guide for.

Nothing to see here!

Yes, nothing at all for too long.

I have neglected my blog and the website for ages.   The main reason is my bad luck with my health.   There was I, minding my own business, blogging and crafting as I should when I was brought down by sciatica.   No warning, no reason, just the proverbial pain in the derriere.   This was accompanied by pains in most other places which made it impossible to sit at a sewing machine.   Or anywhere else!

I was just recovering after weeks of pain when a visit to my chiropractor made things flare up again.   Cue another enforced recovery period.

And then just as it’s become bearable again, I was struck down by a virus which meant more than 2 minutes of activity absolutely floored me.   This was not 2 minutes of vigorous exercise or even housework.   The 2 minutes could be chatting to someone while I was sitting down.   I even missed my first Guide meeting as a leader due to illness.   Husband has been a hero with childcare, school runs and looking after me.   Luckily my tweeting thumb was unaffected, and I’m now a Draw Something addict (user name craftyguider for anyone interested!)

I’m now on the mend and even did some sewing this week.   I’m still shattered, so if anyone is at GirlGuiding’s Big Gig on Saturday, I’ll be the one snoring during Olly Murs and The Saturdays.

And have a look at my twitter profile page.   I’ve updated my background with my new logo and QR code.

Something to see soon!!!!!!

Heartswap

That sounds like something medical, doesn’t it?   It’s actually the next Popular Crafts magazine craft swap, and this time I was linked with the lovely @sarahwalters99.

Her likes included fabric, buttons, pink and girlie so I got my thinking cap on and came up with a heart door hanger.   A bit of IKEA curtain remnant (which I use A LOT!), some buttons, some felt, embroidery thread, a Sizzix Big Shot and flower Framelits die and a bit of stuffing and I came up with this.

I had so much fun creating this.   It was different, creative and I got the same feeling that I got when my owls fluttered their eyelashes back at me for the first time.   My Craftyguidelets both want them for their bedrooms now!

Going with the pink theme, the treat I bought was a mini metal pink bucket (just because it was pink and looked cute) and some heart shaped buttons (again- pink, cute, themed, buttons)

And the best bit of any swap?   The goodies that arrive in the post!

Sarah worried for ages about her swap but she needn’t have.   It’s great!

This fabulous wooden heart with a cute flower embellished peg is lovely.   I’ve always wanted one and it’s the perfect colour for my kitchen.   At the moment it’s keeping all my miscellaneous papers in check.   I love love love it!

My treat was a real treat.

In a lovely glittery bag I got a crochet hook (I want to learn to crochet!), some multi coloured jade beads (I’m also starting jewellery making!) and two heart sweets.   The note with them said that they were to have during my crochet trials but they’ve already gone.   I gave up chocolate for Lent so I needed a sugar fix.

My aim this year was to participate in a craft swap but I’m now hooked (no pun intended!).   Next swap – Spring!!!!!

Cubby Kits Review

Having spotted a tweet from @cubbykit asking for bloggers to review their craft kits for kids, I wondered if I was the girl for the job: a) I have a blog, b) I love crafting, c) I have 2 craftyguidelets who d) love crafting and e) it’s half term!   I qualify and Cubby Kit agreed to send me a box to review.   Yippee!

As my girls are 5 and almost 3, Cubby Kit chose to send me a box suitable for 3-4 year olds.   A box arrived for 5-6 year olds instead which was OK as the craftyguidelets are both professional crafters after all.

The box is addressed to the children which made it very exciting when the postman rang the doorbell.   Inside, the box contained everything you need (and more!) to complete three main activities, complete with full, child-friendly instructions, glue and spreader, paints, paper, and three brown paper bags containing the three main projects.   This month the theme is Outer Space.

As eldest craftyguidelet has been poorly this half term, we chose to make the foam rocket and constellations wall chart projects as a team.

The first brown paper bag contained the precut foam sheets, foam stickers and double sided tape to make the rocket.   Both girls got the hang of what they needed to do, and mummy just applied the tape.   This is our masterpiece!

As we were making it, it sparked lots of conversations about space, what all the stickers were representing, where the rocket was going to and what it would be like to travel in it.   It didn’t take long at all to finish.

The next brown bag was the constellations wall chart.

There were four cards and a silver gel pen to mark the constellations in a ‘join the dots’ style.   This suited both girls, but the constellations were a bit wobbly!   Once the cards were stuck to the black paper sheet using the supplied tub of PVA, the girls got to decorate their chart using the pen and some glitter glue and foam stickers.

The other kit is a papier-mache sun, moon and earth to make which we’ll attempt when the bugs have left the house.

The girls both loved working together on their kit.   There were ideas that I wouldn’t have come up with on my own, and I do sometimes steer clear of paint and PVA in favour of crayons and stickers!   Cubby Kit also supply extra materials so you can go on their blog and look at other ideas, or just carry on creating your own ideas.

To find out how subscribing to Cubby Kits works, just click here.   I received the kit free of charge, but the opinions in my blog are mine and the craftyguidelets.

Stevenage Stamperama

After a really rubbish night with the craftyguidelets, I decided I was going to go to Stamperama.  I wasn’t going to go as I’d been to the Bluewater show last week, but I loved it last year so I went!    Husband broke his shaver and so he dropped me off at the door while he took the craftyguidelets round Argos and Costa Coffee (my 5 year old has a loyalty card!).

As I was on the clock, I did a quick recce round the stands.   Not as many bargain bins as last year, but still lots of lovely stuff to crave.

My main reason for going was to add to my Promarker collection.   Luckily I always carry my list with me so I could see where I had gaps in my colour range.   I got 10 for £15 which was great.   From the same stand I got a spare blending tool, white opaque pens to replace my used up ones, and these gorgeous stamps.

I always loved Sarah Kay images and I think I still have my sticker album from when I was little.   I would’ve bought the entire range of these stamps, but I was good!

I also went on the Meiflower stand and bought a few pearls, charms and gems and these gorgeous embellishments.

They’ll look great on wedding cards.

My other purchases were some embossing folders and a Tim Holtz die of a dress form and bobbin.

Watch out for some new cards coming onto the website!

Creative Stitches and Hobby Crafts (and Meanyjar!)

Today the snow held off long enough for me to get to Bluewater in Kent for Creative Stitches and Hobby Crafts.

It was the first time the show was in Bluewater at the new events venue there.   It wasn’t the biggest craft show I’ve been to – the Creative Stitches part was a bit disappointing, unless you wanted ruffle scarf wool!   There were only a couple of fabric stalls, not a lot of wool, and a few cross stitch places.   In the Hobby Crafts section, there were some absolutely fantastic card samples displayed.   I wish I was that talented.

Of course I still managed to buy a couple of bits.

I always end up getting buttons and ribbons from Fantastic Ribbons.   I also got a bunch of card candi including this fantastic print.

I bought some charms and other embellishments and couldn’t resist these sparkly purses.

And this pattern was just waiting for me to buy it!

But the best bit of the day was meeting up with @meanyjar.   When we found out that we would both be going to the show, we agreed to meet up for lunch.   As an after thought, we also went armed with hooks and wool for a crochet lesson.   After a few texts describing what each other was wearing (I, of course, went as a blue fabric cat, as in my twitter profile), we located each other and found somewhere for lunch.

After a lovely lunch and an even lovelier chat, Jeany treated me to a crochet lesson.   Unfortunately, I seem to have very disobedient fingers.   Jeany was really patient, my fingers were occasionally compliant, and I managed a bit of treble crochet!   I unravelled what I did at lunch, but I’ve since done this.

I know it’s uneven and probably has loads of mistakes in it, but I’m so pleased I’ve done it!   More practice, a better hook, and better trained fingers and I’ll be crocheting properly.   Thanks so much for my lesson Jeany!

After we said our goodbyes, I then had to run the gauntlet of the Bluewater shops.   Of course I got drawn in, and also got pulled into Hobbycraft as I drove past on the way home.

I also bought some bits for my Popular Crafts heart swap which I’m keeping secret.

And finally, I bought hubby a Creme Egg to soften the blow of the credit card bill!

Lacy Scarf

I’ve been knitting since I was little.   I think my first knitting project was a garter stitch frog in the first year juniors which was a dark green octagon with felt features.   I also got my knitting badge in Guides, but my impatience meant that I got bored with projects quickly.   A jumper took me about 5 years and I hardly wore it.   I moved onto sewing as the fabric was already there and just needed sewing together.

Since then, I’ve knitted various little projects like toys and egg cosies which are finished quickly.   When I was pregnant with my first daughter, a period of enforced rest gave me time to knit cardigans and jumpers for my baby to be.   My journey through the Debbie Bliss patterns gave me some new stitches and techniques for my knitting CV.

Now my craftyguidelets are older, I’ve picked up the needles again.   I’ve knitted a ruffle scarf after watching a demo on Create and Craft and picking up a ball of wool in Hobbycraft.   A few tweets led me to Purls of Wisdom by Jenny Lord which was recommended to me as a book with small projects.

I chose to knit the lacy scarf as I’d never tried lacy knitting before.

It’s a simple pattern which is just 21 stitches across and every other row is a purl row.   It was a bit tricky to start with as I kept losing track of which row I was on, but I soon learned to recognise the pattern.   It grew really quickly and I now have a finished scarf.

I chose Rowan Cocoon in Seascape which is the same colour as in the book.   Apart from the mohair shedding a bit, it’s a lovely wool to work with.

I can’t believe I’ve managed to achieve this so quickly!   It’s really given me confidence to try other new things.   On my list is a pair of mittens, socks, a hat and a gadget sock.   But first is the Deramores snood knit along.   It’s my first snood and my first knit along, and so far I’ve cast on.   Watch this space!
